Individuals Coming Off Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters
A recent study suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
